International Image Interoperability Framework IIIF

APIs for interoperable image and AV delivery.

Description

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a set of open standards for delivering high-quality, attributed digital objects online at scale. Developed and maintained by the IIIF Consortium, a global membership organization comprising 71 leading cultural institutions, research universities, national libraries, archives, and museums, IIIF enables seamless access to digital collections across institutional boundaries.

The framework includes multiple complementary APIs, with the Image API facilitating retrieval and manipulation of images and the Presentation API packaging images alongside descriptive metadata. Widely adopted by institutions including the Wellcome Collection, Rijksmuseum, and SAT Daizokyo Database Project, IIIF supports integration with established viewing platforms and research tools (Mirador, Universal Viewer, OpenSeadragon), making it foundational infrastructure for digital cultural heritage worldwide.
