Traditional Knowledge Labels TK Labels

The Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels are an initiative developed and maintained by Local Contexts, an organization dedicated to Indigenous data sovereignty and ethical governance of cultural heritage. These labels enable Indigenous communities and local organizations to express specific conditions for sharing and engaging with their cultural materials, including protocols for access, use, and circulation of knowledge that exists in digital contexts outside community control.

The Labels address gaps in conventional copyright and intellectual property frameworks by embedding Indigenous governance protocols directly into digital systems. They identify community-specific rules regarding sacred or ceremonial material, gender-based access restrictions, seasonal use conditions, and materials designed for outreach.

The system comprises fifteen distinct labels organized into three categories: Provenance Labels (identifying cultural authorities), Protocol Labels (outlining traditional access protocols), and Permission Labels (indicating approved activities). Developed through sustained partnership with Indigenous communities internationally, the Labels function as an educational strategy to communicate the significance of cultural heritage to external users while supporting communities' rights to govern their own knowledge.
