About
The National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA) was established through Act 43 of 1996, transforming the former State Archives Service into an institution reflecting the South African democratic political order. Its mission encompasses preserving national archival heritage for government and public use, and advancing efficient, accountable and transparent government through the proper management and care of government records. NARSSA advises the Minister and Director General on archival matters, consults with the South African Heritage Resources Agency on record protection, and liaises with the Public Protector regarding unauthorized record destruction. The National Film, Video and Sound Archives (NFVSA) is a subdirectorate of NARSSA.
